Context
- Who wrote it
- The letter is from “James.” Many Christians understand this to be James the brother of Jesus, a leader of the church in Jerusalem (Acts 15:13; Galatians 1:19).
- Who it was written to
- James addresses “the twelve tribes scattered among the nations” (James 1:1), usually understood as Jewish Christians living outside Israel.
- The verses around it
- Just before this verse, James speaks about facing trials and how perseverance helps believers grow (James 1:2–4). The request for wisdom is set in the middle of hardship.
Understand
James encourages anyone who lacks wisdom to ask God for it. He describes God as one who gives generously and without finding fault; God is not irritated by the request.
Wisdom in the Bible is more than knowing facts. It is the practical ability to live well and make good choices in light of who God is.
The following verses (James 1:6–8) encourage the reader to ask with trust rather than being torn in two directions.
Observe
Notice what the passage actually says.
- What is the condition James describes (what is someone lacking)?
- What two words describe how God gives?
- What is promised to the person who asks?
- Read James 1:2–8. What situation is the reader probably in?
Interpret
Consider what it meant in its context.
- Why might wisdom be especially needed during trials?
- What does it reveal about God’s character that he gives ‘without finding fault’?
- How does James 3:17 help describe what this wisdom looks like?
James 3:13–18 describes the difference between wisdom ‘from above’ and wisdom shaped by selfish ambition. It is a helpful companion passage.
Apply
- What decision or situation are you facing where you need wisdom?
- Do you ever hesitate to ask God for help? Why?
- Who is a wise, trusted person you could also talk with about this?
prayer prompt
Write down the situation where you need wisdom. Then ask God for it simply and honestly, trusting that he welcomes the question.
